2008 Annual Report

The library had another very busy year. Our circulation continues to increase and we're thrilled to report that in FY 2008 our library had thehighest circulation per capita in the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We increased the number of programs as well this year with more youth programs, adult lectures and several new outreach efforts targeted at teens and retirees.

During calendar year 2008 more than 6,500 people attended our adult and youth programs. This includes our Chilmark School programs every Monday that feature library skills classes, author talks and reading appreciation projects. The Chilmark Preschool students attend our lively Stories and Songs program every Tuesday. Our Saturday Stories and Songs program continues to bring young families from the community into the library. And the Wednesday After School Crafts program is more popular than ever.
Library Friends: The Friends of the Chilmark Public Library continue to provide exceptional support to the library and our patrons. They hold popular used book sales inside the library each year, provide funds for the Offseason Library Cafe, and continue to upgrade our public computing network and wireless Internet service. In addition to supporting our adult and youth programs, they pay for landscaping and purchase our home, and local history books. Outgoing President Sharon Eber turned over the to Susan Murphy in the fall. We thank Sharon for her many contributions over the years and look forward to working with Susan and the Friends in 2009.

Library Volunteers: We are fortunate to have the support of some dedicated and hardworking volunteers,: Lillian Kellman ignites the imaginations of our young patrons throughout the year with -her stories. Jane Naylor maintains the butterfly garden in front of the library. Maxine Stevens does our monthly book displays. Charlotte Rubin helps with collection development. Happy Spongberg is working on inventory this winter. Their contributions are invaluable. We always have new projects in the works and would love to hear from more residents who have a few hours a month to volunteer at the library.

Staff: Director Ebba Hierta is in her third year of service. Assistant Director/Youth Services Librarian Kristin Maloney completed her 17th year of service. Assistant Librarian Irene Tewksbury us in September. Assistant Judy Mueller is in her fourth year.
