2006 Annual Report

The library had a productive and exiting year that included new programs and staff as well as the continuation of successful and popular programs from years past. In June we bid a very fond farewell to Library Director Catherine Thompson who retired after more than 17 years of service. Catherine's years ofdedication and hard work contributed to a smooth transition for Ebba Hierta when she took the helm as new Library Director.

Circulation and program attendance are growing. We've standardized library hours and streamlined circulation policies in our continuing effort to make the library user-friendly. The library is now open 29 hours per week year-round. an addition of one hour, and our morning time is consistent.

The successful wireless Internet service, begun in 2005, was expanded in 2006 to allow more users to access with a stronger signal. We collaborated with the Aquinnah Library on the Fishing and Ocean Life lecture series last fall and have added other new programs such as Movie Night and the Crossword Puzzle Challenge. We continue to serve the Chilmark School and Preschool students with lively programs each week. And our Children's Book Festival in August drew more than 100 youths and their parents.

Library Friends: We lost our dear friend Marvin Joslow, the president of the Friends of the Chilmark Public Library, in 2006. He passed away in December. Marvin's legacy of service to the library lives on, however, and the Friends continue to provide their exceptional support. In December, the Friends held a successful used book sale inside the library. They also began the ChilLib Cafe, an off season coffee house on Thursdays and Saturdays in the library meeting room that has been warmly received by the community.

Library Volunteers: Returning volunteers Rose Anthony, Charlotte Rubin and Happy Spongberg have been joined by Rob Strauss. Their weekly contributions help us tremendously in our efforts to better serve our patrons. Lillian Kellman continues to delight our young patrons throughout the year' with her stories.

Library Staff: As mentioned, Ebba Hierta joined the library staff as Library Director in June. Assistant DirectorlY outh Services Librarian Kristin Maloney completed her 15th year of service. Library Associate
Kimberly Schlesinger and Library Assistant Judy Mueller are in their second year.
