2007 Annual Report

The library had another productive and exciting year that included new programs and staff as well as the continuation of successful and popular programs from years past. We had an especially busy summer with the addition of seven more hours to our summer schedule.

These extra hours, which allowed us to open on Friday mornings for the first time, resulted in circulation increases of 25 percent for the summer months. Circulation and program attendance are growing in the off-season as well.

We continue to serve the Chilmark School every Monday with library skills classes, author talks and reading appreciation projects. The Chilmark Preschool students attend our lively Stories and Songs program every Tuesday. Our Saturday Stories and Songs program continues to young families from the community into the library.

Library Friends: The Friends of the Chilmark Public Library continue to provide exceptional support to the library and our patrons. They now hold two used book sales inside the library each year and have expanded the hours of the Offseason Library Cafe in the meeting room to five days per week. They installed an awning over the back patio that was very much appreciated by our patrons looking for a shady spot to use our wireless Internet service. The Friends also sponsor our adult lecture series have upgraded our computer system and purchase home, health and travel books for our collection.

Library Volunteers: We are sad to report that long-time volunteer Rose Anthony away in December. For many years, we looked forward to Monday afternoons when Rose spent several hours each week working on inventory,
shelving and other projects. We miss her tremendously. Returning
volunteers Charlotte Rubin and Happy Spongberg have been joined this year by Maxine Stevens. Their weekly contributions are invaluable. Lillian Kellman continues to delight our young patrons throughout the year with her stories.

Library Staff: Director Ebba Hierta is in her second year of service. Assistant Director/Youth Services Librarian Kristin Maloney completed her 1 year of service. Library Associate Kimberly Schlesinger moved to upstate New York last September and we are now happy to have
Emily Levett in that position. Library Assistant Judy Mueller is in her third year.
